Big Dan’s BBQ SharesTheir BBQ Love
Stories/Info from our readers
Dan Bosworth, of Big Dan’s BBQ and his wife Denise, brought the BBQ experience to their local rural school in Catawissa, PA Southern Columbia School district hosts a monthly “Farm Fresh Food of the Month” tasting as a part of their menu and a way to encourage students to try local, farm fresh options that they may not be familiar with. Beef was on the menu in May.
The opportunity was perfect because the Bosworth’s also own Rohrbach’s Farm Market. The family-owned farm has been in Denise’s family for 63 years. On the farm the family grows field crops, strawberries, peaches, apples, and pumpkins. They also raise their own Angus beef cattle.
Big Dan’s BBQ was invited to cook up 400 burgers in the school parking lot for all students and staff to enjoy a sample. Not only did they get a chance to taste the farm-raised beef, but they could see and smell the burgers on the grill, as well as ask Big Dan any questions they had about how he cooked the burgers.
In many parts of central Pennsylvania, if you ask for “BBQ,” you will likely get some ground beef, slathered in a ketchup based sauce,
served out of a crockpot (most of the country would call this sloppy joe!) The Bosworth’s have been changing the local definition of BBQ since 2013, providing their customers with a slow-smoked, authentic BBQ experience.
