Leon McLemore, 79, died March 16, 2015 at Pelham Medical Center in Greer, SC, after a brief illness. A native of Lyman, SC, son of the late Marion Lee and Agnes Poole McLemore, Leon was a long time KCBS Master Judge and Table Captain. He was an expert BBQ cook and regularly contributed his time and expertise to his church and other local charitable organizations. Over the years, Leon was a beloved advisor and mentor to scores of cooks and judges alike. In 2013 at the Dillard, Georgia, Annual Bluegrass and BBQ Festival, Leon was awarded the prestigious Terrell Jones Extra Mile Award, recognizing KCBS BBQ Judges who have exhibited extraordinary devotion to their fellow members.
Leon retired as terminal manager for Roadway Express and Spartan Express, was a former employee of Swift Transportation and a member of Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Joy Keller McLemore of Greer, SC (a KCBS Master Judge and renowned Table Captain); two sons, Mark McLemore (Susan) of Simpsonville and Chris McLemore (Teresa) of Woodruff; five grandchildren, John and Chris Peake; C.J., Casey, and Kaleb McLemore; and two great-granddaughters, Maddy McLemore and Kylie Young.
All of us in the BBQ community will miss him sorely.
