Am I the only one that thinks this show is BS! They put Ray Lampe on the first episode to get everyone to watch but they have the same stupid judges that know nothing about BBQ (grilling, smoking, backyard or competition), give you the same ridiculous amount of time and expect the results to be "refined" and "sophisticated". The Food Network jumped on the BBQ bandwagon hoping to snag a few BBQ fans and I will admit I watched the first episode only because of Ray Lampe but if you wanted a real BBQ competition (even in TV time),at least pretend you give them a reasonable amount of time (instead of lying to the rest of America). This Marine is having a hard time holding his tongue after watching this BS!

They are trying to appeal to as large an audience as they can. We would watch a true competition but I'm not sure that many non-Q'ers would. They tune in for the entertainment value.

Most people don't know what real barbecue is, Billy. We ate baby backs at a neighbor's last weekend. Our host proclaimed he had been searching for the perfect rib for years and had finally found it. Cook indirect on a kettle for 1 hr using Kingsford Mesquite charcoal(no smoke wood), separate the ribs, put them in a pan, cover with foil, and put in the oven at 250. They were falling off the bone and my wife raved, but not my idea of barbecue.
(btw, I finally said something when he said another great way was to boil in salt water first. It was friendly but the wife was NOT happy with me.)

HUMBLE IS MY MIDDLE NAME.. HARD NOT TO, WANT TO, HELP SOMEONE STRUGLING WITH INFORMATION FROM TELEVISION AND WHAT WE KNOW TO BE TRUE. EXAMPLE RECENT PHONE CALL QUESTION . HAD PURCHASED MY RUB BUT RIBS STILL TOUGH AFTER 5 1/2 HOURS COOKING..... I ASKED WHAT TEMP HE WAS USING? HE REPLIED "THE LOWEST SETTING ON HIS BBQ UNIT LOW". WHEN HE CALLED BACK HE TOLD ME THAT HE THOUGHT HE HAD THE PROBLEM SOLVED WHEN HE FOUND OUT "LOW" WAS MERELY 180 DEGREES. HE WAS MAKING JERKY, OF COURSE!.. SOME CAN BE HELPED, HE IS NOW USING 245 AS GUIDE FOR COOKING TEMP ON RIBS AND LUMP COAL WITH A STICK OF APPLE FROM HIS BACK YARD. I EXPECT MUCH BETTER RESULTS WITH THE NEXT CALL.. SOME... NEVER HEAR YOU BECAUSE THE MEDIA SEEMS AUTHORITARIAN MUCH AS THE NEWS PAPERS WERE ONCE RESPECTED. A FEW THINK MEDIA MAY NOT HAVE IT RIGHT, JUST NOT ENOUGH FOLKS YET..

Lew, I love it when folks say that they have to boil ribs or chicken to get them tender and ready for the grill. What they're maiking it pork soup or chicken soup is what I tell them. They don't like it, but I don't like they're chicken or ribs either. Maybe have them save the broth and drink the flavor instead of eating it.
You can't teach a pig to sing, it doesn't sound good, and it annoys the pig. Some just don't want to listen. They ask for advice, then badger you with more of what they've heard, rather than listen and learn.
I wish I was born with two stomachs. All the best, Al. |
