I havn't been smoking for at least two years, a lack of energy, high price of wood, butts, and so I stopped for a while. Now I got the fever to give it a go. I just brought eight butts on sale for ninty-eight cents a #. My stacked of hickory and mostly oak has to be at least four to five years old. Half split other half in the round, maybe twelve inches. How old is too old. I don't want to mess up some pretty butts. Please, what would you do? HELP!!!

You should be fine if it's been kept out of the weather. My dad had a stack of about 7 cords of hickory that it took him about 6 or 7 years to get through. I would use the stuff that is already split for your main heat source, and split the ones that are still rounds one round at a time as you need them. Those will give you more of the flavor aspect of the smoke.

Billy, that was last weekend special @ Lowes Foods, limit of four per customer, so I got my four and paid and loaded them in the car and return back inside and got four more. Well worth the aggravation.

I just scored 2 double packs for .99 a lb also!!! I love when the supplier sends the wrong stuff and my meat guy has to move it fast!!!

But normally I get them @ $1.49 a lb.
