How much is the most you would consider paying to enter a contest (assuming it's a quality comp with adequate water, elec., garbage pickup, etc.) with $7500 in prize money? $10,000 in prizes? $12,000 in prizes?
In your opinion, what is the point of diminishing return for organizers?

$200 $300 $300 However, they would need to be top notch for me to return a second time. If it is a qualifier, I'd probably go up another $50 across the board.

I would pay $200 for the 7500 contest and up to 250 for the 10,000 or 12,000 contest
Organizers must not rely on just entry fees for payouts. They must get sponsorships for payouts and call the money they get for entry fees, Gravy.
Thats my opinion but I have worked with a lot of Organizers as the Contest Committee Chairman in the FBA and I know more about this subject than your average Joe.

Rub you know that you are going to WIN $$$$ so you are willing to pay more than the average team. At 300 they would not get enough teams to meet their expectations and then would be in the RED.
If they base their payouts on say 25 Teams and the entry fee causes them to got less teams then someone is left holding the bag.

I agree with Walt...I'd pay $200...$250....and $250. I have paid as much as $300 for a contest before but it was a totally different deal where I pretty much knew that I was gonna clean house. There's way too many good contests going on nowdays that have entry fees in the $200-$250 range that I probably wouldn't cook one again that costs $300 to enter. The only way I'd pay more would be if it was advertised in advance...and guranteed that it was gonna take place....would be if they was gonna have a piss-ant eatin a bale of hay after the last turn-in. I'd pay a $300 entry then cause I have always wanted to see that. |

I've got to disagree with that. I don't know of teams who go to a contest and KNOW they are going to win $$$. I sure don't.
And regarding the $300 entry, Smoke on the Water here in Winter Haven has charged $300 since the beginning, and he maintains a waiting list of teams wanting in every year that don't. He offers a quality contest, which raises money for the Boys and Girls Clubs. That said, organizers do need to secure their prize $$ through sponsorships and not rely on entry fees to cover it.

I'd pay $200 for the first & 250 for the others as long as there were no other hidden fees some charge like for water/elec. If it was a bigger contest maybe w/ more space/benefits I might go more
Walt maybe the reason Rub has been winning so much lately it that he's been "paying" that extra entry fee to the right people

I'm pretty much in the 250 range, but will go a little higher if the payout goes ten places deep instead of all going to Rub. .......stan

Some Organizers do not realize all the other money that teams have to spend to enter a contest. Fuel, meat, rubs, sauces and much more that can make a contest cost a team from $700 up.

Canton GA. had a contest last year 250. great contest. This year they went up to 275 for early entry 300 past deadline. They had about 15 less teams than last year.I was in Texas so I missed this one. They even had less teams do back yard event. The economy may have had a big part of less teams but the entry fee could have been the problem too.

Most contest I cook...entry fees run $100-$150....
And some prize money does come from entry fees, Normally, more teams entered, the bigger the total purse...
Id much rather cook two cookoffs for $100 bucks...than just one for $200...
Competition cooking is about alot more that just the money... and lower entry fees mean more teams can afford to come join in on the fun...

$250 is pretty much the going price around here. I think I've cooked one that was less than that. If I pay over $250, the pay out would have to be upwards of 25K. I've cooked 30K+ for a $250 entry fee. I also try to cook contest that pay down 10 spots.

The most I will spend is $260 for a contest. That's based on how far of a drive for a contest but that's changing for the 2009 season. Looks that I will be driving to Alabama and Georgia for contest. Also depends on if Rub is cooking at the contest if he's there I have NO CHANCE of winning. Being a past contest organizer and a cook team I see it in to different ways. But, I never charged over $240 for entry fees since you have people saying that they will give money to help sponsor the contest. But, when its time to collect the money they don't know what you're talking about or the person that signed letter of content they don't work there any more. That's why I don't organize a contest anymore. I just compete and try to do my best with that. If you got good payouts and alot of spectators to come out you should have a good contest. $10,000= $200 $15,000= $240-$260 $20,000-$25,000= $300

I like the $200 and &250 entry fees. With that said not that I like the $300 enties, but if all I have been told about a contest charging $300 is good or great things I will go or look into going. Like the Winter Haven contest it is for a great cause and not to say others don't but Frank goes all out to try and make people happy not to mention a steak dinner Friday night. As far as Rub being there it does not bother me a bit. All it means is I better be on my game and do what I can to make sure my food turns out just right. So Rub you better bring your A+ game to Perry I got a feeling you gonna need it.
