Hi Folks,
I want to design a Trailer for a Cooker I'm planning to build. I need the Base to be 4'x8' (not including the Tounge). What size axle do I need ?? The Cooker will only weigh no more than 500 lbs. The Cooker will be 4'x3' and be mounted long ways on the Trailer. That will give me 6" on either side of the Trailer. Where does the axle need to go ??
Can I make the Tounge detachable so I can remove it when I'm not moving it around ? Any ideas ???

| You might look at some examples of removable tongues at your local boat dealership. I know lots of boat trailers have them so they can fit in a standard garage. |

| A bit of advice on axle placement. Bolt the axle on to start. After you have built the smoker on the trailer and have the approximate finished weight, then adjust the axle for the best balance. It will be hard to guess perfect placement to get optimal tongue weight before you load the trailer up. |

I am not trying to highjack your thread, but have been wondering about having a removalable tounge on a Lang84D for the same reasons.
Axle placement is going to be tricky, as noted you are likely to have to play with the setback once you have the cooker together.

I AINT GOT NO EXPERENCE AT BUILDING TRAILERS BUT I DID WANT TO ADD IF YOUR BUILDING THE TRAILER YOURSELF BUILD IT BIG ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO COOK OFF IT MAYBE EVEN A EZ-UP OVER IT ONCE YOU GET WHERE YOUR GOING WITH IT.I WOULD USE DOUBLE AXLE

Most of what I've read states that it should be constructed of 2x3 Tubing for the Sides and 2x2 Tubing for the center beams. Does this sound correct ?? Most Trailers (Boat) I've looked at don't use Tubing, Just what I call "U" shaped Angle Iron.

Just from looking at my lang it appears to be 1/4 inch channel iron(U shaped)
A double axle like BOS suggest would pull nicer. If you have a Northern Tool around they have a large selection of axle to look at.

There's a Northern Tool in Macon Ga. Thats the closest one to Savannah Ga. My local hardware store stocks 2"x2" square axles, springs, etc. Not sure of the Load Limit on these axles though.

| I build smokers and steamers all the time as a hobby. You can use a 2000# axle. The axle placement on a trailer 60% in front of the axle and 40% behind the axle. If you mount the smoker horizontly at the rear of the trailer, you will have to calculate the axle placementand remember the 10% weight required on the tougue. I use a 3500# axle, 4 inch drop, 58 inch spring centers, five on 41/2, 15 inch rims, aculube axle. The 3500 lb axle costs 10% more and I feel that it is worth it. People always return and want additional griils, stoves, etc added. You can have a trailer 8 feet in width if you want.If you place the smoker, centered over the axle, you can use the 60/40 rule. My trailers are usualy 7 feet wide. This will alllow a 14 inch shelf in front of the smoker door and storage/stove behind the smoker. Remember that you need 10% of the total weight on the trailer ball. |

What I'm wanting to build is a Trailer 4' wide and 8' long. The Cooker will be 3' wide and 4' Long mounted so that the Lid of the Cooker faces the wheels. This again will give me 6" on either side of Cooker. I also want to mount the Cooker 6" from the rear of the Trailer. That leaves me 3-1/2' before the tounge.

| Using the 60/40 rule, you are 8 inches too close to the rear of the trailer. What are you planning for the 30 inches area in front of the smoker? If you have a stove/charcoal, this may work. Remember the toungue weight. Remember the working height when you are pulling meat and preparing meat for serving. I would allow a mininum of 12+ for the shelf for a prep area. |

I've built several trailers before (including a trailer pit). I agree with Chas, go with a 3500# axle...you'll find it doesn't cost much more. Also, I prefer to use channel instead of tubing for the frame. With just a small hole the tubing will ultimately get moisture in it and start rusting from the inside out.
One of the single most important things to do when building a trailer is make sure your tongue is perfectly centered or it will not track straight. I can send you pictures of how I built mine if you want. |

I BELIEVE THIS WOULD COST MORE THAN USING SINGLE JACK ON TRAILER TONGUE TO BALANCE ...I NOTICE MOST CARNIVAL TRAILERS USE TONGUES THAT STORE "UNDER" THE TRAILER. SAVING THEM EXPENSE OF PAYING FOR UNNECESSARY FRONTAGE .. HOWEVER, THEY HAVE THEN INSTALLED CORNOR JACKS TO LEVEL TRAILER ..
