Thought you guys might want to see updated pictures of the smoker. All of the metal work is done. I am currently removing rust, knocking off slag and prepping for paint. I'm ready to finish this thing. It's been 2 years in the making (albeit sometimes with loong pauses in the work).

There are 27 pix in all, so if you don't see them all they are still uploading.

What is the distance from the ground to the firebox and the bottom of the door opening?

It's at least 18" I can't remember off hand. I'll measure it again when I get the chance. I made sure to give it plenty of clearance to keep it off the ground on uneven terrain.

Yes the trailer was built from scratch just for this cooker. My welder built the trailer, and I can tell you... this entire rig is built like a tank because of his hard work. Check out the wheel guards. Those were his idea in case I hit a tree with the wheel, he said he wanted to make sure I didn't rip the fender off or mess the wheel up. The entire thing is way over built, but that's good.

here's more photos from earlier stages of the build, in case anyone's interested:

Thanks guys. Twisted, your smoker is very nice. Are you going with the same design for your 2 new rigs?

Same idea only on a larger scale for my next ones, mounted on a trailer like yours. The one I am working on now is made from a 250 gal propane tank, the next is a 500 gal tank. I used your idea on the firebox handle (latch made the same way & used a tailer hitch like yours. The comp I went to last folks gathered around & loved it. I had several that wanted me to make them oe but they got shy when I told them what it would cost. Lotsa folk just dont understand how much work it really is. What type of brick is that in the bottom of your firebox?

For sure. When you build one on this scale, it gets very expensive. I am so far over what I thought I would spend it's not even funny, but it's nice knowing you could never buy anything made commercially this sturdy. This smoker will outlast my kids kids kids. That 500 GAL one will be a monster. Steel is so expensive. I ended up implementing so many custom touches, that stuff adds up very fast. You're right, people just don't understand how expensive these things are to build, and that's not even considering labor.

I got the firebrick from Acme. Seems like it was around $1 a brick I believe the size is 4"X9"X2.5", or something thereabouts. I bolted angle iron around the edges of them to keep them from shifting or bouncing up during transport. This will keep them set, but allow me to remove them to inspect the 3/8 plate from time to time. The whole idea is that it will keep the firebox insulated by reflecting the heat up, also reduce the corrosive effect that ashes have on steel.

I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on the bigger rigs!
