I arrived in Memphis late last night for a long weekend. I hope to hit at least 2 bbq joints per day through Monday. I will follow up with reviews. Main meal today will be with large group at Rendezvous--I know--most real bbq folks pishaw on the place but it's a landmark and we have to go.

update later.

I love Central BBQ on Central. It's about 4 or 5 miles out of downtown, but it's well worth the trip.

Get the reviews up. I am looking forward to the know on where to go.

Perfect Q = Tender succulent meat with a savory rub, cooked low/slow with aromatic wood. Sauce is just another condiment.

Weber - Smokey Joe Silver (SJS)
Brinkman - Smoke 'N Grill (Bullet)
New Braunfels - Black Diamond (NBBD)

Snuck out before the other folks got here and my sons and I went to Germantown Commissary.

Actually first bbq nachos I have ever had and I am hooked. WOW!

Also sampled some ribs and pulled pork. Very good also. Both good smoke color and good flavor--rib meat a bit dry but still good texture.

NEXT!

Judge? I'm moving this to the Restaurant forum for searching later.
More will be interested in your adventure, and they'll be able to find this even when it goes to archives, by searching Memphis.
Thanks for the good reporting!

Germantown Commissary is a very good place and not too well known outside of Memphis/Germantown. Central BBQ is also a very good spot. Had lunch at Interstate last Tuesday. It was good but they put too much sauce for my taste. Next time i'll order it on the side.

Rendevous last night. We are a group of 10. Most everyone at ribs. One ordered lamb but the waiter warned that they were "fatty" today and steered him to ribs. Everyone was positive about the ribs. I could tell they were not slow cooked (and I already knew that). Their dry rub is good and there is a lot of it on the ribs. Their two sauces were also good.

My 15 year old son and 16 year old nephew shared a mixed bbq nacho and a two meat combo platter. The bbq chicken nachos were very good and Hudson said the dry rub sprinkled on top made a big difference. They ordered ribs and pork loin (chop). Neither liked the pork loin and gave most of it to me. I took one bite and had trouble getting it down. It was a thick mushy flavorless hunk of stuff (yuk).

Graceland tour this morning so south side of town means Neely's Interstate BBQ.

None of us had ever had bbq spaghetti so five of us tried it. I had never had it but it tasted exactly like I thought it would. I really liked it but when I make it I will use more meat and a little less sauce. I enjoyed it as did the others.

A few had ribs and riblets and they gave high marks especially since the ribs were much meatier than the ones we had at Rendezvous (thank the pig or the buyer). There was a lot of sauce left on the plate, shirts, napkins and faces, but it was tasty.

Slaw was best we've had so far, but still not as good as mine at home.

BBQ pork nachos were good but had too much cheese and not enough meat. Also the cheese was obviously the same canned cheese sauce we serve at the ballfield concession stand. (The argument remains that the best nachos are the pork ones at Commissary or the chicken ones at Rendezvous).

My wife and son had chopped bbq pork sandwiches that were tasty and had so much meat on them you could not hold it like a sandwich. I was surprised to see them on buns and as I thought I had read that Texas Toast bbq sandwich was a Jim Neely trademark.

Another pleasant suprise was the overall cost. My parents shared a full slab, had two drinks, potato salad and beans for less than 20 bucks (plus tip).

We are headed to Central tonight on our way to walk Beale Street. A lot of our crew are tiring of Cue but other menu items should keep them happy. My son thinks he may try the smoked bbq bologna sandwich and my sister thinks she may have wings. I'll let you know the results.

By the way, we are here on a family trip celebrating my parents 50th anniversary. It was last month and they refused a big reception and preferred we take a trip together. So my wife and I and our two sons, my sister and her husband and their daughter and son, my neice's fiance' and my parents are doing a long weekend in Memphis. So far we have had no food except continental breakfast and bbq from the stops off the various top ten lists of Q in Memphis.

No one was really hungry when we arrived at Central; or at least not until we smelled some of the orders being delivered to the tables.

I did not see nor smell wood smoke while we ate outside.

The jackpot dish of the evening was the bologna sandwich. I assume the balogna was smoked, then sliced thick, then cooked on the griddle. The perfect side was the freshly cooked seasoned pork skins.

I had a pulled pork plate with homemade potato chips and turnip greens. All was real good but the cue did not have a lot of smoke flavor.

The slaw was crispy and good with its signature being that the mayo was laced with mustard.

The folks at the counter were friendly and helpful with our large group's order.

This will probably be my last opportunity for memphis cue this weekend. It has been an enjoyable pilgramage. I look forward to trying to make some of these dishes at home soon.

I think Germantown Commissary is my pick for the best cooked pulled pork in memphis (or at least this weekend). Several places had awfully good ribs.

I understand your reasoning but the move killed my thread. I posted on the general so that it would get the most reads and feedback as/while my trip was happening since I was lucky to have internet access in the hotel room. I'm sorry if that is cheating or manipulative.

I know it was mostly a restaurants thread and that placing it there will be good for archives purposes. However I enjoy the back and forth banter and there is very little chance of that on the lesser traveled forums.

I ain't mad, but I had less fun with the trip thread after the move.

I'm sorry if the move distracted or caused "less fun" for you.
Your first post to this topic, I considered to be "news about a member."
As the thread progressed, it became more apparent to me that it belonged in the restaurant forum, for the previously stated reasons.
I truly try to do what is reasonable for the forum as a whole.
Again... sorry it caused you a moments unhappiness.
and thank you for understanding.

If you vary your menu selections, you can stand a lot.

Your being a bbq judge means you are into bbq as much or more than me and I did four bbq restaurants in two days. Some of my family members were tiring of cue, but they stuck it out.

I did try to take at least one bite of pulled unsauced butt/shoulder at each location so that I could make a fair comparison.
