I got a big question. This March I can compete and vend at a local bbq contest. That is if I pass a temp vendors permit inspection. My question is "For a one time event should I purchase liability insurance?"

Yes, for any and all venues where you are selling to the public. There are companies that specialize in single event coverage though I must admit I do not know much about them. By the nature of our business we must carry a fairly large, annual umbrella covering many things. I am sure someone here with more experience on temporary coverage will happen along.

You might also contact your agent as to see if they offer a PUP ( personal umbrella policy). They can vary in cost from company to company and some will have no idea about them. I keep a million dollar pup. This also protects me from a large judgement of personal liability. Including car accidents and other issues. Make sure you read any policy very closely and that it either contains coverage for vending or does not exclude it in it's verbage.

Talked to my insurance agent today. They could not cover me. So I checked with a local commercial agent and this is the scoop. The policy would need to be a commissary policy to cover event/catering. The cost for a year would be $600.00 for 1 mil. coverage. That does not include equipment. The agent felt that is the lowest from all the brokerage firms he works with for the coverage. Deal or no deal?

Furgus, Keep checking, We have a 2 mil policy that also covers our rig and the full year cost is just a little bit more than that. It could be a reigonal thing and the cost in our area(MI)might be lower. check back and let us know how you do.

No worries

$1M is the minimum accepted by most states for HD temporary and or annual licencing purposes and is also commonly sited as the minimum required to show proof of by event organizers. Depending upon many factors you might find that you need much more. Price wise I have seen it vary widely and as has already been suggested I am sure a good deal of this variation is due to the details of the fine print.

After some research rates differ very little. A lot of it depends on the need to insure. Such as $2 per $100 to insure equipment etc.. The biggest hurdle is finding a company to insure me without me owning a restaurant to cater out of. Also finding that brokerage firms outside of NC are more willing than in to insure event vending. Starting to wonder if the cost is worth it to vend one or two events this year.

Try a local insurance agent that deals with business or commercial type policies. Tell them your plans and a good agent will spend the time to listen and see what they can do. Make phone calls and compare. Most of all read the fine print if you decide on a policy.
